What is a separable bunk bed?
A separable bunk bed is a bunk bed where the two sleeping areas can be separated from each other to create two single beds. Most often, it is a wooden bunk bed. Note that the separable bunk bed is a very specific type of furniture, not all bunk beds are separable. Separable models have technical specifications that allow the two beds to be easily separated.
Why choose a separable bunk bed?
The bunk bed that is separable is the ideal solution when two children share the same room temporarily. This might be the case before moving to a home with an extra room, or during renovation work for example.
The separable bunk bed thus allows two children to be set up in the same room. When a second room becomes available, you simply need to separate the furniture to have two single beds. This solution is more sustainable and economical than buying a classic bunk bed and then two single beds later.
What age for sleeping in a bunk bed?
Whether it's a bunk bed with stairs or a ladder, children must be at least 6 years old to sleep in an elevated bed. This also applies to loft beds or mid-height beds for example. After 6 years, the risk of falling is lower and the separable bunk bed can be used safely.
What are the other double bed formats?
Beyond the separable bunk bed, there are other double bed formats such as:
- The solid wood bunk bed (which can also be separable)
- The trundle bed
- The storage bunk bed
- The triple bunk bed
- The storage bunk bed
In short, if you have several children sharing the same room at home, there are many different solutions to set them up comfortably despite lack of space, lack of storage space, a tight budget, etc.
What is the maximum weight for a bunk bed?
Regarding the maximum weight for a separable bunk bed, it's the same as for a classic bunk bed. Most often, a solid wood bunk bed has a maximum weight limit of around 100 kilos. However, this information should be verified directly in the assembly instructions. Make sure this maximum weight is respected to avoid affecting the strength of your separable bunk bed.
What mattress height for a bunk bed?
The height of the children's mattress is also a recurring question regarding bunk beds in general. Here too, it's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure the top bed's guardrail remains fully effective. The recommendation regarding mattress height will be found in the instruction manual of the chosen separable bunk bed. Most often, a standard thickness children's mattress will perfectly match the manufacturer's recommendations.
Where to place a bunk bed?
You can place the separable bunk bed in a corner of the room or against a wall. This way, it takes up less space and is even more pleasant to use for children. Having one side or the head of the bed against a wall has something more reassuring. Also make sure that the ladder or stairs are easily accessible.
What other furniture in the room?
If two children share the same room, the room must be furnished intelligently. Try as much as possible to have things in duplicate so that each child has their own space. If space doesn't allow, make sure to separate one child's belongings from the other's.
For example, opt for a storage dresser with a drawer for each child. Choose two toy chests or well-separated storage boxes for toys. Adopting a color code often makes sharing the room between two children easier. Everyone finds their belongings more easily and it limits disputes.
