Montessori floor house bed
A real success in recent years, the floor house bed is directly inspired by the Montessori method. It's also called a Montessori house bed. With its lovely house shape and its low-to-ground base, it encourages children to become more independent while providing them with a playful environment. Whether you want to apply the Montessori method or simply limit the risk of falls from your child's bed, the floor house bed is the perfect model.

What is a floor house bed?
A floor house bed is a house bed where the bed base and entire sleeping area are close to the ground. This children's house bed particularly helps facilitate getting up and going to bed for young ones. It is directly inspired by the Montessori method, whose principle aims to encourage children's independence in carrying out many daily tasks. With this wooden house bed, it's not uncommon to see children getting up and going to bed independently while respecting the sleep schedule necessary for their well-being.
What is the Montessori method?
The Montessori method is an alternative education method that is becoming increasingly widespread. It gives children a certain freedom of learning to develop their cognitive abilities and motor skills. It is particularly based on principles of autonomy and experimentation. It can be easily implemented at home simply by creating certain habits. Moreover, there are now many items that help facilitate its implementation at home. The floor house bed is one of these items.
When should you put baby in a floor bed?
Generally, it is recommended to move your baby into a big bed from around age 2. Indeed, it's around this age that they will start wanting to climb over the bars of their cot, which becomes a risk. However, since the floor house bed is only low in height, baby can be placed in it much earlier. Some parents put their child in it from as early as 3 months old.
It actually depends on how the space is arranged, the proximity of parents to the child during the night, and the opinion of the healthcare professional who monitors the child.
How to choose your floor house bed?
To choose a girls' house bed or a boys' house bed on the floor, there are several criteria you can prioritise such as:
- Made in France or made in Europe.
- Solid wood certified PEFC.
- Ecological panels with low formaldehyde content.
- Water-based varnishes and paints, solvent-free.
These different criteria will help you choose a quality and more eco-friendly model. Of course, other factors may come into play such as price, delivery time, the possibility of returning the item, etc. Also choose a comfortable and ecological children's mattress to ensure optimal rest for your child.
What other elements should be placed at baby's height?
If you want to apply the Montessori method, there are other elements you can incorporate into your child's room. The goal is for them to be able to easily access their belongings. You can therefore opt for furniture that gives them access to what they need such as: a small bookshelf, storage bins for their toys, a small clothing rack with their clothes, etc.
Of course, some activities cannot be carried out close to the ground. Therefore, it's the child who will gain height, particularly thanks to the Montessori learning tower. It allows the child to safely reach the height of a table, worktop or sink.
How to make baby more independent regarding bedtime and wake-up time?
Beyond the floor house bed, there are baby alarm clocks that allow very young children to know when they can get up and when it's still time to sleep. It displays a colour or a small sleeping or awake animal. Set according to the time by parents, it's a very practical way for children to situate themselves in time. It also helps baby distinguish between day and night.
We can also help children recognise their own signs of tiredness to help them better understand how they function and therefore know when they need sleep. This is thus a completely different approach that the Montessori method offers.
