The Montessori bed: principle and advantages of a floor bed
You have probably already heard of floor beds. Compared to other models of children's beds, these beds are placed directly on the floor or are slightly raised. Following the Montessori method, a low bed allows your child, from a very young age, to get up and go to bed independently. As parents, you are no longer forced to get up every time your child asks.
The Montessori bed is ideal for teaching your children to manage on their own and only go to bed when they are tired and feel the need to sleep. Floor beds are designed to support the child and follow their own rhythm. Little ones therefore gain more autonomy and learn to listen to their needs.
For parents, the benefits are also interesting. You no longer force your child to go to bed without being able to get out. Thus you avoid going back and forth to their room. They can play, read or relax and decide for themselves when they will go to bed. Both children and parents therefore gain freedom in their daily lives.
At what age can a child sleep in a Montessori bed?
There isn't really a minimum age for a child to sleep in a Montessori bed. It is therefore entirely possible to install a floor bed from birth. The famous educator leaves parents the choice of when they want to offer a Montessori bed to their children. There are no contraindications to offering a Montessori baby bed from the first year. However, some parents prefer to wait until the child takes their first steps before offering this type of bedding.
If you're concerned about the risk of falling during the night or naps, solutions exist:
- Choose a house bed which is the furniture that offers sleeping closest to the floor, limiting potential incidents.
- Install a children's rug, flat cushions or duvets all around the bed. In case of a fall, it will be cushioned by the bedding placed nearby.
- Choose a trundle bed or a stackable bed. These beds can be installed alone (without the pull-out bed). Low enough to allow your child to get in and out of bed without adult help, they also have the advantage of having a slight edge to prevent falls.
- Choose a bed slightly larger than the size recommended for your child's age. Baby will thus have more space in the bed to move and turn without risk of falling.
How to choose a Montessori-style bed for a child's or teen's room?
Our range of Montessori beds is vast and varied. To help you choose between all our models, discover the advantages of each type of wooden Montessori bed:
- The Montessori house bed. The great classic and most appreciated by both parents and children, the house bed will easily find its place in any child's bedroom. Its house-shaped structure and floor-level base make it an ally in the learning and development of little ones. In addition to being able to access it on their own, with the house bed your child can imagine stories and play independently.
- The Montessori children's bed. This single bed close to the floor adapts to all types of interiors. Enhance it with colourful bed linen, cushions or even throws to make it even more welcoming and personalise your child's sleeping space.
- The Montessori 90x190 cm daybed. Still following the principles of respecting the rhythm of little ones, this bed is easily accessible. The daybed can also be arranged as a small sofa for reading, playing or relaxing moments.
