Easily transform a child's room into a teenager's room

As children grow into teenagers, they often want their environment to match their tastes more. Very quickly, they will want to part with their childish decor to choose something more age-appropriate. This need for change is completely normal, and parents can then help their children create a room that suits them better. Here are some tips for parents on how to set up a teenager's room.

Chambre rangée

The big sort

The first step often consists of sorting through your child's belongings. Clothing, toys, decorative items, school supplies, everything can be gone through to get rid of certain things. We recommend opting for large storage boxes and bags. This way, you can create several categories:

  • What we keep
  • What we want to keep as a memento of their childhood (often, these are old toys, notebooks, etc.), we can then store them in storage boxes
  • What we give away or sell (to relatives, associations, classified ads...)
  • What we throw away

Together with your child (you wouldn't want to throw away something they care about), you can therefore do a big sorting of their belongings according to the different categories mentioned previously. This will allow you to make space and make things easier to rework the decoration. Your child may not want to part with toys or stuffed animals from their childhood, it's important to respect and understand this by letting them keep what they want in their room.

Take stock of their desires

For this new room, discuss with your teenager about the style of decoration they want. Some will have more precise ideas and desires than others. You can help them get inspired by suggesting they look at images on social media, for example. It's recommended to start a bit in advance so your teenager has time to really think about it and make their choice based on what they truly like.

A fresh coat of paint

If your child has childish patterns on the walls of their room, it may be time to give it a fresh look. You can opt for a coat of paint or wallpaper, which will radically change the atmosphere of the room. Let your child choose the colours and patterns they want based on the theme of the room. Guide them in their choice to favour something they are not likely to tire of too quickly and that will allow them to maintain an atmosphere conducive to rest and concentration in the room.

A new bed

The transition to a teenager's room is also a great opportunity to install a new bed in the room. You can opt for a larger, less childish bed. The teenager bed with storage is for example an excellent choice. Just like a child's bed with storage, the teenager bed with storage includes a 90x190 cm or 90x200 cm sleeping area as well as integrated storage. After the convertible child's bed or the 2-year-old child's bed, you can therefore choose a teenager bed with storage.

To make your choice, we recommend opting for a wooden teenager bed with storage. It will thus be more durable. Prefer FSC certified wood to ensure it comes from eco-managed forests. Moreover, opting for made in France furniture will allow you to choose better quality furniture. You can notably choose the MANLY trundle bed which meets all these criteria and also provides an additional sleeping area (more advice on choosing a natural wood bed here).

If the child's mattress matches the dimensions of your teenager bed with storage and is still in good condition, you can certainly keep it. If not, consider opting for a suitable single mattress.

More subtle bedding

If your child had bedding sets with their favourite childhood heroes or patterns that were a bit too childish, it's time to renew their bedding. To avoid making a mistake, you can opt for plain bedding sets in the new colours of your teenager's room. This way, you can easily mix and match elements if you wish.

Age-appropriate accessories and decor

Finally, you can refine the decoration of your teenager's room by choosing elements that match their new tastes. You can notably choose curtains, rugs and cushions in the new colours of the room. Also make suggestions for decor accessories that are more in line with their world. You can also choose to take them to a decoration store so they can make their own choices.

Guide them to think about several things like frames with images of what they like, original decorative elements, lamps, etc. For example, you can opt for a lamp with a coloured LED bulb to create the desired ambiance by choosing the colour according to their wishes.

You can also choose to create a decorative element together if your child enjoys crafts. There are many online resources and DIY ideas for creating a dream catcher, a photo frame, a pen holder, etc. This will be an opportunity to share an activity together and make their decoration even more original and personal.
