What we call a storage bed is a bed that conceals a large storage space under the base. Most often, it's a double bed that you'll find in an adult bedroom. Using a gas lift system, you can lift the bed base and mattress in one movement, and they will stay raised. This gives you access to the entire bed area with variable height to store many items such as linens, suitcases, shoes, etc.

The unique feature of the storage bed is that it's very easy to use since you only need to lift or lower the base to access the storage space. There's no need for complex manipulations to access this type of storage.

What are the different criteria for choosing a storage bed?

Dimensions

Dimensions are the first criterion you should consider when choosing a storage bed. Indeed, just as when choosing a classic bed, these must correspond to the space you need to feel comfortable, as well as the space available in the room. There are 3 standard dimensions that you'll find in the vast majority of cases:

  • 140x190 cm or 140x200 cm: This is the smallest model for a double bed. While it's very comfortable when sleeping alone, it can quickly become a bit narrow when sharing between two people. The 140x200 cm storage bed is better suited for younger people and/or those with a smaller build.
  • 160x190 cm or 160x200 cm : With a 160x200 cm storage bed, you have enough space for two without taking up too much room in your bedroom. The 160x200 cm storage base is the perfect middle ground for most households.
  • 180x190 cm or 180x200 cm : With this model, you're opting for maximum comfort. If you have a large bedroom, this bed will offer all the space you could want.

There are even larger sizes available on the market. However, don't forget that opting for a new bed often means taking the opportunity to change your mattress as well. Remember to include this additional purchase in your overall expense.

Materials

Beyond deciding whether you want a 160x200 storage bed or something larger or smaller, you can consider the materials that make up the furniture you're interested in. Indeed, several solutions are available when it comes to materials and design.

Generally, the wooden storage bed is the most popular. Wood is indeed a sturdy material that's durable over time. Moreover, by choosing this type of furniture, you have the opportunity to make a more eco-responsible choice by selecting, for example, furniture made from PEFC or FSC certified wood. With this label, you're assured that the wood used in making your furniture comes from eco-managed forests.

Some storage beds have a textile-covered base. The result can be very successful, but be careful if you have pets and children at home. Your beautiful velvet or linen bed frame might be difficult to keep stain-free.
