Ottoman bed or drawer bed?
Would you like to take advantage of the space occupied by your bed to include storage? There are now many very clever solutions for this. The ottoman bed and the drawer bed are among the most popular. Practical, they allow you to store a large volume of items without taking up space in the room. But then what are the characteristics that differentiate these two solutions? Which one should you choose depending on your room layout? How do you properly organize your ottoman or drawer? Here's our advice!
Ottoman bed or drawer bed: what is it?
The ottoman bed and the drawer bed are two solutions that allow you to combine a bed with a clever and discreet storage system.
The ottoman bed
The ottoman bed is a piece of furniture equipped with a hydraulic system that allows you to lift the base section to reveal a large storage compartment the size of the bed under the sleeping surface. Most often, we talk about a 160x200 cm ottoman bed or a 140x200 cm ottoman bed since it's a double bed. When it's open, you discover a large storage space. When it's closed, it's impossible to guess that so many items are actually stored under a 160x200 cm ottoman base.
Most of the time, we talk about a wooden ottoman bed, because it's the material most commonly used for this type of furniture. Our 140x200 wooden ottoman bed BASTIA is the perfect example of a model that is both chic, practical and quality since it's made in France.
The drawer bed
The drawer bed is a completely different type of solution. It's also a classic bed, with the difference that it is equipped with one or more drawers under the base. The space between the base and the floor therefore allows you to slide in drawers (most often on wheels), which allow you to store many items. You can find this type of bed in single or double versions. The number of drawers varies depending on the model offered.
Advantages and disadvantages
The ottoman bed and the drawer bed both have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to consider them before making your choice.
Advantages and disadvantages of the ottoman bed
On the advantages side, the ottoman bed is very easy to use. With a single hand movement, the base and mattress are lifted to reveal the items stored underneath. It allows you to store many items since the ottoman is both large and deep. It's a very practical solution if you're short on space in your bedroom.
On the downside, it's worth noting that you should favor a quality model. Indeed, if the gas lift is of poor quality, it will tend to get stuck. This is very annoying if it's in the open position, because you won't be able to use your bed anymore, but also in the closed position, because you won't be able to access your belongings anymore.
Advantages and disadvantages of the drawer bed
The drawer bed has the advantage of also being very practical to use. The drawers slide smoothly to reveal their contents. Once the bed is closed, the room looks tidy and doesn't appear cluttered either. Generally, these are large-capacity drawers that give you access to a very nice storage space.
On the downside, it should be noted that you must have the necessary space to pull out the drawers. Indeed, if your bed is positioned between two pieces of furniture or two walls, it will be impossible for you to access your storage drawers, and therefore your belongings.
Which solution is best suited for me?
Depending on your room layout, you can easily find the solution that suits you best. If you have limited space, you may have difficulty opening the drawers, so prefer an ottoman bed. If you need large storage capacity for suitcases, guitars, or other large items, the ottoman bed will also be the most suitable.
On the other hand, if you want to opt for a single bed for a child's room for example, the drawer bed will be preferable. What's more, if you already have a bed, you can quite easily add just the drawer to save money.
Properly organizing your drawer or ottoman
Finally, it's important to properly organize your ottoman bed or drawer bed once you've made your choice. Indeed, with such a storage space hidden from everyone's view, it can be tempting to store all kinds of clothes, toys, shoes, and other items there without taking the time to sort and organize properly. Pay attention to this if you want to be able to find your belongings.
You can notably use boxes that will allow you to create a separation between different types of objects for example. If you have other storage options at home, prefer to put items that you only use occasionally there.
Furthermore, take the time about once a year to empty everything, vacuum inside, sort and finally put your belongings away again. This way, you're sure to always have perfectly organized drawers or ottoman. Whether you opt for an ottoman or a drawer, you'll always need to keep it well organized, otherwise you may have difficulty closing it again.
