Optimise space with a loft bed

In a small room, the loft bed is the ideal solution to better manage space while creating a cosy and comfortable environment. So what exactly is a loft bed? Why is it ideal in a child's room? How to choose it well and how to optimise the space afterwards? Discover all our advice to create a beautiful children's room with a loft bed.

What is a loft bed?

What we call a loft bed is a bed with an elevated sleeping area, a bit like a bunk bed from which the lower sleeping area has been removed. The child therefore accesses the bed base via a small ladder, which is why the loft bed can only be used from the age of 6.

Most often, we talk about a wooden loft bed. Wood is indeed a noble, robust, warm and durable material. It therefore offers many advantages and that's why it is most often chosen for making children's furniture.

What are the advantages of this bed?

The loft bed offers many advantages. It is above all a fantastic way to save space in the smallest rooms. Indeed, its elevated position allows for another piece of furniture to be placed underneath, thus maximising every square metre to its fullest potential.

It is also an original sleeping arrangement that children usually love. The elevated position and access by ladder tend to appeal to younger ones. Durable over time, it can be used from childhood through to adulthood.

How to choose a wooden loft bed well?

The choice of a wooden loft bed is made based on several different criteria.

The format

First, there's the bed format. Indeed, you can opt for a classic wooden loft bed, but there are also all-in-one pieces of furniture. This is particularly the case with the loft bed with desk. This model incorporates a desk underneath in addition to the elevated sleeping area. This can be interesting if you want to opt for a desk that perfectly matches the bed and save space in the room.

The dimensions

Most often, it's a 90x190 cm loft bed that is offered for sale. This is the standard size for a single bed. There are also variants with 90x200 cm dimensions. Therefore, it is important to ensure that you choose a mattress with the right dimensions.

The style

The children's loft bed can take many forms depending on the chosen model. For example, you can opt for a model combining wood and white like our Prado loft bed. There are also models entirely in wood colours and in different shades. The shape can also vary to opt for a more or less modern, classic, original piece of furniture, etc.

The materials

Finally, we have already mentioned that a wooden loft bed is a very good choice. But we can go even further in choosing suitable materials. You can, for example, ensure that you opt for a model with FSC or PEFC certified wood. This label means that the wood used for your wooden loft bed comes from sustainably managed forests.

The use of low formaldehyde panels or solvent-free paint is also preferable. These are more virtuous materials for the environment, but also for your child's well-being. Finally, favouring made in France ensures a choice that is often more eco-responsible and of higher quality.

How to furnish a room with a wooden loft bed?

The presence of a single loft bed greatly facilitates the furnishing of a child's room, especially if it's a small room.

Occupy the space under the bed

First, it's about finding what you will do with the space under the bed.

As mentioned earlier, installing a desk is an excellent idea. Your child thus has a workspace without taking up more space in the room. You can therefore opt for a wooden loft bed with an integrated desk, or add a desk of your choice. Don't forget to complete it all with an office chair, a lamp and decorative accessories to create a cosy environment in which your child will love spending time.

You can also opt for installing a bench. This will be perfect for receiving friends to play console games or watch a movie, for example. The bench can also serve as a sleeping area for inviting a friend or cousin to sleep over.

Finally, you can also opt for setting up a play and reading corner. Install a nice rug, cushions and storage boxes to create a pleasant space where your child will love spending time.

Add storage

You will also need to add storage for your child's clothes and toys. Opt for well-designed solutions that take up as little space as possible while offering good storage capacity. Adapt according to the available spaces. Also remember to regularly sort through your child's belongings to prevent furniture and boxes from overflowing, thus maintaining a pleasant and well-organised space (more advice on furnishing a baby's room under 10m2).

Refine the decoration

Finally, once the room is furnished, all that's left is to decorate the whole space. Use space-saving decorative items to maximise the available area while personalising this room to reflect your child's personality.
