Our DIY decoration ideas

Do you enjoy crafts and want to personalise your child's room? There are a multitude of DIY project ideas to make this space even more authentic and personal. Whether you're used to DIY or you're a beginner, here are some ideas that will allow you to add your personal touch to your child's room decoration.

Furnish smartly!

First of all, it's important to install the basic elements in your child's room, namely a bed, storage furniture, and a desk if space allows. If you're short on space or your child has a lot of belongings, a children's bed with storage can be a very good idea! The children's bed with storage or teen bed with storage is a children's bed that also has built-in storage. This can be small shelves surrounding the bed or large chests in the case of a mid-height bed with storage, for example. We can also mention the bunk bed with storage as well as the trundle bed with storage, both of which incorporate storage elements below the bed base.

While this type of children's bed with storage allows you to save a lot of space, it won't take up more room than a classic bed as we're generally talking about a 90x190 bed with storage or a 90x200 bed with storage. Thanks to the children's bed with storage, you'll make a real space gain in the room, which will allow you to create a larger play area, a reading corner, add a desk, or simply keep a well-organised room. The children's bed with storage is therefore a perfect solution for small spaces as well as those needing organisation (more advice for arranging a child's room).

DIY projects for your child's room

Beyond installing a children's bed with storage and other furniture that will make up the room, it's the decorative elements that will give the desired atmosphere to the space. While there are very nice things available in stores, it can be more fun and economical to create some yourself, so here are some examples of DIY ideas!

A spool knitting decoration

You may have already seen these pretty knitted words to hang on the wall. This type of decoration is also found with your child's name. Know that it is very simple to make this type of project which can make all the difference in the room's decoration. It's a technique that allows you to knit without needles, using a spool knitter which is a small device that can even be used by children. It's therefore a very good idea for a shared activity.

All you need to do is knit a long cord with the spool knitter and then use wire to give it the desired shape, thus forming a word or a name that you can then hang on the wall. Many online videos give details on the right way to go about it to get a nice result!

Poetic embroideries

The trend of hanging embroidery hoops on the wall continues to charm and is a perfect opportunity to create a lovely personalised decoration. You can very easily find embroidery kits online that are more or less complex. Once you've got the hang of it, you can also opt for creating your own design and why not embroider your child's name. This activity is perfect when you want to enjoy a hands-on activity without too much mess and that doesn't require too much expense.

A second life for a vintage piece of furniture

To save money in a child's room, you can decide to give a second life to a vintage piece of furniture. We will therefore opt for a wooden piece of furniture in the desired shape, which we will start by sanding to remove the old paint or varnish. Once the wood is bare, we can give it the desired finish. It's preferable to choose a solvent-free paint to limit the presence of volatile organic compounds (this is also true when choosing new furniture). You can also replace the knobs if there are any to further personalise the piece. This activity is a bit messier than the previous ones, but will undoubtedly satisfy the more DIY-inclined!

A Homemade Chalkboard

Does your child like to draw? Create a chalkboard for drawing with chalk on the walls of their room! There are specific paints available that allow you to create a real chalkboard directly on the wall. Very simple to make, this customisation is also fun! It allows you to have a board in the room without taking up any space at all.

A decorative garland

To add colour and originality to the room, you can also opt for creating a personalised garland. There are many ideas online that you can adapt, such as using pom-poms, fabric shapes, paper, photos, etc. The possibilities are numerous to create a pretty garland on the desired theme and in the colours of your child's room. You can then hang it on the wall above the headboard, for example, or above a chest of drawers or desk to showcase it.

You can even opt for creating a light garland by personalising an LED garland, for example!
