- Categories : Tips

Contrary to some misconceptions, plants can definitely find their place in the baby's room. More than their decorative aspect, they would also have real air-purifying properties to purify the air in the baby's room. So which plants should you favor and which should you avoid in a child's room? What are the other ways to preserve air quality in the baby's room?

Why choose plants in the baby's room?

Plants are an excellent way to decorate the baby's room by adding a touch of nature. They immediately bring life and color to the space and are a very good way for a young child to connect with nature in their own environment. Moreover, some plants are also sometimes credited with air-purifying properties. While this remains to be proven, plants do help create a pleasant and serene environment that will be quite beneficial for the child.

If you are concerned about CO2 emissions during the night (plants absorb pollution and produce oxygen during the day, to release CO2 at night), the quantity is so minimal that it has no harmful impact on our bodies. You can definitely place plants in the baby's room, as long as you choose them carefully!

Which plants should you favor and which should you avoid?

To ensure that the presence of a plant is safe for baby, it is good to know the most suitable species, and those that, on the contrary, should be avoided.

3 ideal plants for a baby's room

So that baby can benefit from the presence of plants in their room, it is recommended to opt for non-toxic species. This way, you can decorate the baby's room without taking any risk. There are a multitude of non-toxic plants that can be placed indoors such as:

  • The fittonia: It comes in pink, red, purple, green or even yellow, with white, gold or silver tones. This small indoor plant is not toxic and has no thorns.
  • The Boston fern: This small green plant will quickly fill out and become a real decorative asset in the baby's room.
  • The chlorophytum: There are several species, including chlorophytum comosum, also called spider plant, with its long and thin leaves.

Which plants should be avoided?

There are many plants to avoid in a child's room, as they can pose a more or less significant risk. This is particularly the case for:

  • Fragrant plants: Their scent can be too overpowering and even cause headaches. Therefore, avoid scented plants such as jasmine, lavender, gardenia or citronella.
  • Plants with toxic sap: Some plants have sap that can be very toxic. This is particularly the case for plants whose sap contains rubber, such as ficus or aloe vera. Once ingested, it can cause vomiting.
  • Plants with thorns: Plants with thorns or very pointed leaves should obviously be avoided to limit the risk of injury.
  • Plants with allergenic and/or toxic substances: Some plants produce substances that can be allergenic and/or toxic, so they should absolutely be avoided. This is particularly the case for ivy, spathiphyllum and many others.

If in doubt, do not hesitate to inquire directly at the garden center.

What furniture to preserve air quality in the baby's room?

To preserve baby's well-being, it is essential to pay attention to the air quality in the room where they sleep, especially their bedroom. More than just ventilating daily, you can also choose products that limit the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

This is particularly the case with a wooden baby room designed with materials with low formaldehyde content or water-based paint. This baby room will thus be quite adequate to preserve your child's well-being. Moreover, opting for a wooden baby room will allow you to choose quality furniture that is durable over time. If you are expecting twins, you can opt for a wooden baby room as a baby room duo that will have the same advantages (more advice on which baby beds to adopt for twins).

It is particularly important that the wooden baby bed in their wooden baby room meets these different criteria. You can find a classic crib with bars, but also an evolving baby bed or even a combined baby bed for example. The combined baby bed will allow you to enjoy several pieces of furniture in one.

It is also recommended to unpack and assemble the furniture well in advance and to ventilate the room properly. This is also true for the paint that can be used on the walls. There are wall paints suitable for decorating children's rooms. The complete baby room will thus help preserve air quality. More than the choice of plants, it is therefore the entire room that will require special attention.
