Choosing the most suitable bed

At the age of 2, a child may start to become too big for their baby cot. It's then interesting to consider opting for a bed for 2-year-olds. But what does a bed for a 2-year-old look like? How to choose it? What are the other criteria to consider to support your child in the process of change?

Bed for 2-year-old children: safety first

When we talk about a bed for a 2-year-old child, we're referring to a small bed that will allow them to leave the cot safely. Moving from a baby bed to a simple bed is not always suitable. To limit the risk of falling, it is advised to use a bed designed for 2-year-old children.

What is a bed for 2-year-olds?

What we call a bed for 2-year-old children is a children's bed with guardrail that will allow for more space while limiting the risk of falling. Whether with bars or in other forms, the guardrails are installed around (or only on one side if the bed is against a wall) the bed base to prevent the child from falling during the night. However, the child still has the ability to enter and exit their bed as they wish.

The Montessori bed

There's the bed with guardrail, but there's also the Montessori bed. Montessori beds are most often house beds or simple beds. They have in common that they are very close to floor level. They allow the child to get up and go to bed independently and thus reduce the risk of falls. So it's entirely possible to choose a house bed for your 2-year-old child.

What size bed for a 2-year-old child?

It's important to choose the right size bed for a 2-year-old child. The idea here is that they don't feel lost in a bed that's too big (compared to their baby bed), but also that they don't feel too cramped. Most often, a size of 90x140cm is recommended.

This size, which is also found in convertible beds, is ideal up to the age of 6. It's a perfect in-between, before choosing a full-size bed of 90x190cm.
