Which mattress for a child's bunk bed?
Nateo CONCEPT
Choosing the right mattresses for the bunk bed
In a flat or small house, it's not uncommon for children to share the same room. The children's bunk bed then appears as an ideal solution to limit space loss. There are many models on the market, which allows for a wide choice of styles, materials, colours, etc. However, you also need to consider the type of children's mattress that you will install in this bunk bed.
What is a children's bunk bed?
The children's bunk bed is a bed where the sleeping areas are installed one above the other using a specific structure. You can opt for a bunk bed with two sleeping areas and there are even three-place models. Most often, the child accesses the top bed via a small ladder.
The playful and fun aspect of the children's bunk bed never fails to appeal to the youngest. Taking height to go to bed is often very much appreciated. For the one who will be installed at the bottom, they will have the impression of being in a small hut throughout the night. If children appreciate this bedding, so do parents. The children's bunk bed allows for a real space saving (compared to two single beds side by side). As a result, there is much more space to install storage or create a play area.
The different types of bunk beds
As mentioned earlier, the choice in terms of bunk beds is very wide, giving parents a multitude of possibilities. For example, there are:
- The wooden bunk bed: Robust and warm, solid wood is a safe bet for children's furniture. If possible, we prefer it to be FSC labelled, meaning it comes from eco-managed forests.
- The 90x190 bunk bed: This is the standard size for a single bed. This children's bunk bed can thus be used also in adolescence, or even by adults (provided that the maximum weight is respected, especially for the top bed).
- The separable bunk bed: This bed allows you to separate the two sleeping areas to create two single beds. It's a very practical and economical solution, for example if you have a project to create a second children's room in the future.
- The 3-place bunk bed: Instead of having 2 sleeping areas, this children's bunk bed allows for 3 (this is particularly the case with our PRADO model). The third is most often found in a drawer just below the bottom sleeping area. You just need to pull it out and sometimes deploy its legs for the bed to be ready for use.
- The bunk bed with storage: There are also models that combine sleeping and storage. These are very practical pieces of furniture in rooms where space is limited.
Which mattress for a bunk bed?
Once you have chosen the children's bunk bed you want to install, you also need to select the mattresses. Indeed, most children's beds are not sold with a mattress. The latter must therefore be purchased separately.
Just like for furniture, there are many possibilities in terms of mattresses on the market and several selection criteria must be taken into account:
- The size: It is essential that the chosen mattress is the right size. Most often, we talk about 90x190 bunk beds, but there are also other sizes such as 90x200. We will therefore pay attention to the dimension of the sleeping area to choose the right mattress to install there.
- The material: The material is also very important when choosing a children's mattress. Therefore, natural materials are often preferred to opt for an eco-friendly mattress. The bamboo mattress, for example, is a quality and durable product. It also benefits from antibacterial and anti-dust mite protection. You can also opt for organic cotton to choose a natural and healthy product.
- The thickness: To ensure your child's safety throughout the night, it's important to choose the right thickness for a child's mattress. Most often, a thickness of 16 cm is the maximum to comply with the safety guidelines of most bunk beds.
Size, material and thickness are therefore the three main criteria to respect when choosing a mattress for a children's bunk bed.

What else should you know about bunk beds?
When you want to buy a children's bunk bed, more than the choice of model and mattress, there is other information to take into account.
For example, it is recommended to use a bunk bed only from the age of 6 for the child. This is especially true for the top bed. Before the age of 6, the risks of accidents and falls are considered too high.
Moreover, the assembly of the bunk bed must also be done adequately to avoid any safety issues. It is therefore very important to follow the assembly instructions carefully and to respect the manufacturer's recommendations. In case of doubt or problem, it is advisable to contact the seller.
We will also ensure to respect the necessary distance with the ceiling which must be at least 60 cm. Moreover, the space must be sufficient between the top bed and the bottom bed. The child installed in the bottom bed must be able to sit without bumping their head.
