Wood recycling: easy and useful!
Want to provide a healthy environment for your children while preserving natural resources? Discover how wood recycling transforms waste into sustainable opportunities, with concrete solutions to integrate recycled wood furniture into your daily life. Explore the 6 key steps of recycling, ecological benefits and responsible choices for eco-designed and Made in France furniture.
The 6 steps of wood recycling explained simply!
Step 1: Collection 🚛
It all starts here! From used furniture to abandoned pallets, wood is recovered at waste collection centers or collected directly from individuals and businesses.
Step 2: Sorting and control 🔍
Once collected, the wood is carefully inspected. Pure wood (without paint or treatment) is separated from treated, contaminated, or damaged wood.
Step 3: Shredding 🪓
Off to the shredders! The sorted wood is reduced to chips, small pieces, or sawdust depending on its future use. Nothing is lost, everything is transformed!
Step 4: Purification and cleaning 💦
The chips and sawdust undergo purification to eliminate any impurities (metals, plastics, or chemical products).
Step 5: Transformation ♻️
The purified chips become new products: particle boards, compressed wood, heating pellets, or garden mulch. A second life begins!
Step 6: Redistribution 🎁
Finally, the recycled products return to the market. The furniture you buy tomorrow could be made from the wood you recycled yesterday!
Wood recovery: how many tons are actually recycled?
| Category | Quantity (in million tons) | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Annual wood waste production | 8.7 | National data 2025 |
| Annual wood waste collection | 7.4 | 92% of waste collected in 2025 |
| Total recovery (material + energy) | 5.8 | 79% of collected waste recovered |
| Material recycling | 3.2 | Use in particle boards (46% of recycled wood) |
| Energy recovery | 2.6 | Heating and electricity production |
| Non-recovered waste | 1.6 | Landfill or storage in 2025 |
| Wood pallet collection | 1.8 | 93% reconditioned in 2021 |
| Environmental impact | 1 ton recycled | Avoids 46 kg CO₂ and saves 1,826 kWh (equivalent to 900 km in electric) |
| 2028 Objectives | 2.5 (recycling) / 5.6 (energy) | New facilities announced |
Wood recycling transforms waste into valuable resources. In France, 7.4 million tons of wood are collected annually, with 5.8 million recovered. This process reduces environmental waste and extends the material's useful life, contributing to the circular economy.
Wood follows a structured path after collection. It is sorted into Class A (untreated) and B (lightly treated), shredded, then cleaned of impurities. The obtained particles are used to manufacture panels or are used for energy production, avoiding landfill.
Recycling wood limits deforestation and reduces CO2 emissions. One ton of recycled wood avoids 46 kg of CO2. Discover how furniture eco-responsible illustrates the ecological benefits of wood recycling.
Wood is classified into three categories determining its recyclability.
- Class A wood (untreated): recyclable. Examples: sawmill by-products, pallets, crates, cable drums. To be deposited at waste collection centers or during bulky waste collections.
- Class B wood (non-hazardous treated): recyclable. Examples: panels, wooden furniture, forest residues. Reused after sorting in material or energy recycling streams.
- Class C wood (hazardous treated): non-recyclable. Examples: railway sleepers, telephone poles. Must be incinerated in specific facilities to control pollutant risks.

Every action counts: your impact through recycled wood
♻️Wood waste recovered as material becomes particle board, paper pulp, or mulch. Those directed towards energy are used to produce heat via biomass heating plants.

🌿Recycled wood furniture meets the expectations of environmentally conscious families. Durable and robust, it prevents deforestation while bringing unique character to interiors through its natural textures and shades. Recycled wood, often more mature, resists wear better than new wood, ensuring an ecological legacy for future generations.
