Which bed to choose for a baby?

There are several types of baby beds on the market, allowing you to choose the one that suits your child's needs, but also the space you have or your budget.

The classic baby bed with bars

The baby bed with bars is the great classic of baby beds. It can be used from birth until about 2 years old (this is generally when the baby stands up and tries to climb over the guardrails). The dimensions of this type of bed are usually 60x120 cm and there are therefore suitable baby mattresses.

The cradle baby bed

The cradle baby bed is smaller than the bed with bars. It is more suitable for returning from the maternity ward and is most often used until the child is 6 months old. After that, the child is placed in a bed with bars.

The convertible baby bed

The convertible baby bed is a baby bed with bars or a cradle that will evolve as the child grows. For example, you can opt for a convertible baby bed with bars that will then transform into a child's bed to be used from 2 years old, like our VOLT model for example. The convertible baby bed is very practical, as it allows to extend the life of the furniture. Opting for a convertible baby bed is, for example, wise if you have chosen to invest in a complete baby room. This way, all the furniture remains matching, even as the child grows.

Just like the classic baby bed with bars, there are a multitude of styles to find the convertible baby bed that will meet your desires. You can opt for a very modern design, more classic, or even a vintage convertible baby bed for example. Discover our top 3 vintage baby beds.

The wooden baby bed

The wooden baby bed is the model we find most often. Whether it's with bars, in a cradle format or even if it's a convertible baby bed, it's often a wooden baby bed we're talking about. Warm and noble, wood is an ideal material for a baby bed. Preferably, choose furniture made with wood from eco-managed forests. This can be recognised by the PEFC or FSC label. There are also solid wood baby beds for even more well-being for the baby.

The combination baby bed

The combination baby bed is a suitable solution for small spaces. It allows you to enjoy several pieces of furniture in one. In a combination baby bed, you can for example find a convertible baby bed and a changing table, or even storage furniture. This clever solution is ideal when you lack space in the children's room. Most often, this type of furniture is also modular according to the needs and age of the child.

What should we pay attention to?

More than the style of bed we're going to choose, there are also a number of things we'll need to pay attention to for baby's safety.

A recent bed that meets standards

It is very important to choose a bed that is recent to ensure it complies with current safety standards. Today, the NF EN 716 standard is in place to ensure that the spacing between the bars is designed to prevent the baby from getting stuck. It is therefore recommended to opt for a new model as older baby beds may not meet the safety standards in force nowadays.

Quality materials

The materials with which the furniture is made are also important for promoting the child's safety. Wood is preferred as it is a natural material. It is also recommended to choose furniture with a low formaldehyde content. If it's a white or coloured bed, it's preferable that it be painted with water-based paint. The aim is to limit the emission of volatile organic compounds that can be harmful to the child's well-being.

A suitable baby mattress

It is also important to choose a suitable baby mattress, whether for a cradle baby bed, a convertible baby bed, or any other type of baby bed. By "suitable", we mean the right size, quality, and if possible made of natural materials to promote the comfort and well-being of the child, but also to avoid exposing them to certain substances that may be harmful.

Adequate temperature and humidity level

For the child to feel comfortable and have good nights, care should also be taken to ensure that the temperature and humidity level of the room are suitable. A temperature between 18° and 20° is recommended. As for humidity, a rate between 30% and 55% is recommended.

Avoid pillows, sheets and other soft toys

It is strongly advised against using pillows, sheets, blankets or soft toys in a baby bed. They can indeed increase the risk of suffocation. It is recommended to put the baby in their pyjamas and then in a sleeping bag, all adapted according to the room temperature. Moreover, check that the child is neither too hot nor too cold.
