Baby is coming: when to make the first purchases?

Getting organised for baby's arrival
When you find out you are expecting a child, you may quickly find yourself wondering which wooden baby room you plan to choose, or what the best car seat is. While all these choices require careful thought, it is not recommended to start too early or too late. So what is the right time to make the first purchases for baby? What does the ideal baby room consist of? When should you share your gift list? And what about second-hand items for your wooden baby room?
When should you start making the first purchases?
It is hard to resist the sight of a cute soft toy, a wooden baby room or tiny clothes when you find out you are pregnant. Yet it is recommended to be patient. Firstly because some items require careful thought, but also because the risk of miscarriage is unfortunately present in early pregnancy.
It is therefore recommended to wait until between the 5th and 6th month to start choosing a wooden baby room as well as the other items to welcome your baby. This is the perfect moment, as you will not be in the rush of late pregnancy. You can take the time to think carefully about your choices, or opt for items that sometimes require a waiting period. At this stage, you can generally still move around without too much difficulty, making it easier to visit shops and prepare the room. Finally, this is also a period during which you may find out the sex of the baby if you wish — this information is valuable for couples who want to adapt the décor according to their child's gender.
What does the ideal baby room consist of?
The first purchases to prepare for baby's arrival involve choosing furniture for the room. As such, several essential pieces of furniture need to be planned for, such as:
- A baby bed (cradle, cot, combination bed or even a convertible bed like our MILENNE model for example)
- A dresser to store nappies, swaddles, wipes, etc.
- A wardrobe to organise clothes and bed linen
- A changing table or a changing mat to fit on the dresser
- A toy chest for a tidy room
- A armchair for parents to breastfeed or bottle-feed comfortably
When it comes to furniture, we recommend opting for a wooden baby room. Wood is a quality and durable material. Moreover, the wooden baby room can also be eco-responsible. We will then favour furniture made in France, from PEFC or FSC certified wood (i.e. sourced from sustainably managed forests), as well as with water-based paint and low formaldehyde panels. These last two materials for a child's room will help limit the presence of volatile organic compounds and thus preserve baby's well-being.
We of course recommend assembling the furniture as soon as it is received. This will help avoid being caught off guard if baby decides to arrive earlier than expected, give you a better sense of what might be missing in the complete baby room, allow you to replace any element of the wooden baby room that may be defective, and also to air out the room.
When should you share the baby gift list?
If you have planned to create a baby gift list, you will also need to organise yourself to select what you wish to include, as well as to share it. When you go scouting for the baby room, you can take the opportunity to add items to your gift list. Generally, it is recommended to include items at all price points. You can therefore include a wooden baby cot as well as small accessories such as bottles or toys. Everyone can thus contribute according to their means.
It is recommended not to wait too long before sharing the gift list to ensure that everything has been received in good time. Between the 5th and 6th month of pregnancy is therefore also the right time to invite your loved ones to participate in purchasing items for your baby.
What about second-hand items?
Preparing for the arrival of a child can represent a significant cost for parents, and second-hand items are a way to save money as well as to limit one's environmental impact. Friends and family are often eager to pass on items that belonged to their children, and second-hand articles can also be found for sale at low prices.
It is nevertheless recommended to be careful when it comes to certain items. For example, opting for a vintage baby cot that is too old is not recommended. Older manufacturing standards are not as safe as those applied today. If you wish to opt for a second-hand baby bed, you should therefore make sure it is not too old. You can also create a vintage baby room with new furniture in a vintage-inspired style.
On the other hand, when it comes to clothing, certain toys or decorative elements, you can perfectly well opt for second-hand articles. The wooden baby room will only be more original and personalised! Simply check the condition of the items purchased carefully and clean them thoroughly before storing them in the wooden baby room while awaiting baby's arrival.
Nevertheless, for a newborn, it is still recommended to purchase new products but made from recycled wood such as eco-friendly wood panels with a low formaldehyde content.
