The Mediterranean style, how to adopt it in your home?

The seaside, the sun, the beach, the gastronomy, how can one not appreciate the gentle way of life in the Mediterranean? While not everyone is lucky enough to live in these regions where the sun never sets, it is entirely possible to create this ambiance at home. Bring the sea spray and seashells into your home with the Mediterranean decor trend! Tips, tricks and golden rules, we explain how to decorate your house in the image of seaside villas.

What colours for a Mediterranean style?

For Mediterranean decor, in terms of colour, we draw inspiration from the coastal towns of Greece and Italy. The dominant colour of your Mediterranean living room or your seaside-inspired bedroom will therefore be white or cream white. Walls, floors and wooden furniture are thus tinted white to bring brightness and freshness. This is also the case in the little ones' room with a solid wood baby cot or a wooden children's bed.

One of the advantages of a predominantly white decoration is being able to highlight all the colour accents more easily. In your white interior, you just need to add a few coloured elements to immediately showcase them.

The Mediterranean trend is created by combining white with a range of blues and some ochre colour notes. Your cushions, throws and rugs will therefore be adorned with sky blue, deep blue or azure blue patterns. For ochre, we focus on small decorative elements. A single terracotta cushion, ochre tableware or a frame hung on the wall in terracotta shades are sufficient.

Natural materials: the must-have of Mediterranean decor

What truly characterises the seaside style and Mediterranean decoration is mainly the choice of materials. For decor inspired by beach houses, we focus on raw and natural materials. The main furniture will therefore be solid wood furniture in its natural colour: wooden children's bed, sideboard, children's chest of drawers... Prefer furniture with lighter shades and therefore avoid dark wood furniture that would darken your space.

As for small furniture, that is, chairs, armchairs, side tables... opt for light and flexible materials. These are mainly rattan, sisal, raffia or even linen.

These natural materials with neutral, soft and warm tones are used throughout the house: a sisal rug in the bedroom, a raffia lampshade in the living room, a rattan armchair in the veranda, a macramé decoration in the children's room, jute canvas cushions on the sofa...

Essential accessories

While colours and furniture are essential to provide a framework for interior decoration in Mediterranean style, accessories are just as important! Thanks to a few well-chosen objects, you will be able to give substance to your interior and especially set the scene for a seaside house.

For a decoration worthy of the most beautiful villas on the Mediterranean shores, you can opt for:

  • A sisal or raffia rug. This ultra-natural material is also very trendy. The indoor or outdoor sisal rug brings a warm and marine feel to your decor. The sisal rug goes well with the decoration of your living room, your bedroom or even in the children's room.
  • Candle holders. Candlesticks and tea light holders made of natural materials are essential in Mediterranean decor. String, sailor's rope, macramé or even driftwood, all these materials should be favoured.
  • Wicker baskets. In addition to being truly practical, wicker baskets are also very attractive in an interior. A large basket in the bathroom for laundry, small storage baskets in the bedrooms or a basket to hide a flower pot in the living room, all occasions are good to install them in your home!
  • Driftwood. If you had to keep just one, it would be this! Driftwood allows you to easily create a marine atmosphere in your interior. There are numerous solutions to showcase it: hanging lights, wall decoration, candle holder, outdoor decoration...

A floral touch to perfect the seaside decor

In all decorating styles, flowers and plants are essential. They bring a lively and warm aspect to your room. For total harmony with your Mediterranean decor, focus especially on plants found in Greece, Italy or the south of France.

For the living room or lounge, you can install some succulents. They are easy to maintain and require little attention. Carefully choose the planter for each plant to stay within your beach theme. Pots made of natural materials should be considered first: wood, string, raffia, macramé... In the kitchen, add potted aromatic plants: thyme, rosemary, mint, basil... They will decorate your interior and you can use them daily.

In the master bedroom or even in your children's rooms, you can opt for dried flowers. They are ultra-trendy, require no maintenance and also bring a very airy feel to your room. For decor with Mediterranean accents, turn to pampas grass, lavender, dried baby's breath, grasses, eucalyptus... If you or your children are sensitive to the pollen of these plants, you can also invite them onto the walls: a stencil and a bit of paint and eucalyptus can be found on the walls of your little one's room!

Vintage decor elements for an authentic atmosphere

Have you considered second-hand decoration? Flea markets, yard sales or even antique shops are full of decorative gems to install in your home! In addition to giving a truly unique style to your interior, hunting for objects is an excellent activity to do with family.

For dried flowers as well as natural materials, you can also source directly from nature. Keep an eye out during your outdoor walks and bring back driftwood, pampas grass or pebbles from your strolls. Remember not to take everything from the same place to avoid disturbing the ecosystem of the area. By hunting for treasures or taking walks, you also give your interior an ecological and responsible aspect. For furniture, turn to wooden furniture that is environmentally friendly!
