Multifunctional Guest Room: Our Tips and Tricks!

While very pleasant when hosting guests, the guest room is a space that's far from being used permanently. Therefore, it's possible to dedicate this room to other uses the rest of the time. It should thus be tastefully furnished to make it as pleasant to use according to its function as it is a restful bedroom for your guests. So what are the tips for creating a multifunctional guest room?

What other uses for a guest room?

As we mentioned, the guest room can be much more than just a bedroom the rest of the time. It's not uncommon for it to also serve as an office, but it can also be used as a playroom or walk-in closet for example.

An Office

The guest room/office combination is a room found in many homes. It allows you to give two uses to this space to maximize its utility. Thus, during the week and work periods, the space is used for working, which is particularly pleasant especially if you work from home.

If you regularly receive guests on weekends or during holidays, the office then becomes a guest room. You can host your guests by providing them with a complete room. They can thus stay with complete privacy at your home.

A Playroom for Children

If you don't need an office, but the children's rooms lack space, you can also create a playroom within this guest room. You can store children's toys and belongings there, and also provide them with a dedicated space for play and fun.

However, be sure to make children understand that while guests are there, the playroom is temporarily inaccessible. It's up to you to decide if this seems feasible in your home. If not, prefer another use than a playroom for your guest room.

A Walk-in Closet

It's not uncommon for the guest room to also serve as a walk-in closet. Indeed, the whole family's belongings often take up a lot of space that's hard to find in bedrooms. With a room used as a walk-in closet, you can create a proper organization system for storing clothes and household linens. Everyone can find their things more easily, making daily life much simpler.

The walk-in closet is often a passage area, so you can definitely use it as a guest room. You just need to plan ahead when your guests are present by taking what you need in advance to avoid disturbing them.

Which bed to choose for a guest room?

Depending on the available space in the room, you can consider several possibilities for a guest room.

The Day Bed

The day bed works on the same principle as a single bed. The only difference is that it can also be used as seating during the day. It's therefore much more pleasant for a multi-purpose guest room, but remains usable by only one person. However, you can opt for an extendable day bed like the MIHO 90x200 extendable day bed which is inspired by the trundle bed principle.

The Double Bed

The double bed is a great classic, it allows you to accommodate two people easily in your guest room. However, make sure you have the necessary space available. Indeed, the double bed usually takes up a lot of space.

The Single Bed

The single bed takes up much less space, but it only allows one person to sleep. You may quickly realize that two beds would have been necessary when hosting a couple or a family, for example.

The Trundle Bed

The trundle bed is the middle-ground solution between a double bed and a single bed. The 90x190 trundle bed cm has exactly the same dimensions as a single bed. An adult trundle bed therefore doesn't take up more space. The difference is that a 90x190 trundle bed or a 90x200 trundle bed has a second pull-out bed hidden under the first bed's base. You can therefore opt for a wooden trundle bed in your guest room. There are real advantages to having a trundle bed in a guest room.

Which mattress to choose for a guest room?

Once you know how you'll use your guest room and have chosen the bed you plan to install, all that's left is to choose a mattress. Choose one that's as universal as possible, neither too soft nor too firm. This allows your guests to settle in comfortably, regardless of their body type.

No need to invest too much in a mattress that will only be used occasionally. However, still opt for a quality product so that it's comfortable enough and lasts over time.

How to create a welcoming and comfortable guest room?

Once the bed and mattress are chosen, you can work on furnishing the rest of the room. To make it a functional space for its other use, but also cozy when you have guests, we recommend to:

  • Ensure there is enough storage so that your work documents/children's toys/clothes are not scattered everywhere when you have guests.
  • Create a pleasant and neat environment with, for example, color or perhaps a wallpapered wall to give charm to the room.
  • Don't forget the decoration with a reading lamp, a mirror, picture frames, curtains, cushions, etc.

In short, make sure this space is as well decorated as the rest of the house to properly welcome your guests.
