Baby room: promoting autonomy!

Encouraging a child's autonomy is the best way to save time in daily life, but also to allow them to acquire new learning. Indeed, certain daily actions can be managed much more autonomously so that the daily life of the whole family is only more pleasant. Therefore, the baby's room can be arranged in this sense thanks to different furniture and accessories.

The Montessori method as guidance

If you want to encourage the autonomy of a very young child, the Montessori method should be very useful to you. It's an educational method that offers more freedom in learning. The child will notably choose the activities they wish to carry out to develop their cognitive and motor skills. They are also led to gain autonomy in all the small daily gestures, particularly by participating closely in household life.

💡 This approach helps develop self-confidence and respect the child's rhythm. Moreover, it involves arranging the child's environment precisely to allow them to gain autonomy.

Therefore, you don't necessarily need to apply this method to the letter, but certain equipment and ways of doing things may interest you.

How to furnish a room to promote autonomy?

The layout of the room is a good way to promote the child's autonomy by allowing them to perform certain actions on their own.

Choosing the bed

The choice of bed in a child's room is very important. It's what will allow the youngest to fall asleep, feel reassured and soothed. To promote autonomy, we can focus on several types of beds.

The convertible baby bed

The convertible baby bed is a baby bed designed to evolve with the child. Initially, the convertible baby bed looks like a very classic crib. This wooden baby bed can actually be transformed into a child's bed with a few manipulations described in the assembly instructions. The convertible baby bed thus goes from a wooden baby bed with bars to a child's bed. Moreover, the convertible baby bed can also be a combination baby bed. This is for example the case with our PALME combination baby bed. It very easily allows you to transform a baby room into a child's room.

The Montessori bed

The Montessori bed is particularly designed to encourage the child's autonomy. Indeed, it is a bed that is particularly close to the ground which allows the youngest to get up and go to bed on their own, and to limit the risk of falling. It can notably be combined with a Montessori alarm clock. This shows more than just the time. It shows the child by means of a drawing or a colour whether it's time to sleep or get up. Thus, when the child wakes up a bit too early, they know whether they should stay in bed or if they can get up.

An adapted play and reading corner

As for the play corner and reading corner, it must be adapted so that the child can enjoy it alone. Rather than a high bookshelf, opt for a low bookshelf with compartments to store books more easily. The same goes for toys. Prefer using baskets and chests so that baby can access their things more easily, and learn to tidy them up.

Indeed, you can already set up a storage system such as a colour code for example so that baby can tidy up their things themselves.

Clothes at child height

As for clothes, the simplest way to store baby clothes remains the chest of drawers or wardrobe. You can even use the chest of drawers as a changing table by adding a changing top on it. To support the child's autonomy in choosing their clothes and when getting dressed, you can make available a small clothes rack with seasonal clothes. Thus, it's them who can choose the outfit they want to wear today according to their preferences.

Moreover, installing a mirror so that baby can look at themselves is an excellent idea. There are mirrors with a support bar for baby to hold onto. Fix it to the wall at floor height and you're done!

And outside the room?

More than just room layout, other items can promote the autonomy of the youngest.

The learning tower

Promoting baby's autonomy can also be done outside their room. The best example to help a little one participate in household activities is the learning tower. This step stool equipped with a safety rail allows children, even the youngest, to stand at the height of a table or countertop, for example. Also derived from the Montessori approach, this equipment can make all the difference.

When you're cooking, doing the dishes, brushing your teeth, or doing a creative activity, your child can observe or participate closely with you thanks to the learning tower. They learn even more things and can in turn repeat the same gestures.

The routine chart

This chart allows the youngest every day to know how their morning and/or evening routine will unfold and to perform the different actions in order. They can then mark them as completed on the chart to follow the progress of the routine autonomously. There are many different formats and even some that can be customised according to household habits.
