10 tips for creating a play area in your garden

Do your children love to play in the garden whenever they can? Make them happy by creating a space just for them in your garden! They can then enjoy the nice weather to play and have fun as much as they want thanks to a few simple arrangements. Discover our 10 tips for creating a play area for your children in the family garden!

1 - Install a swing

A symbol of childhood and outdoor play, the swing is a must-have in the garden! Hung from a tree, between two posts or on a suitable structure, the swing brings joy to both young and old. For it to last a long time, prefer a wooden model that will change colour over the years, but won't lose its strength.

The swing now comes in different configurations: single, double, special baby, bird's nest... With a homemade or ready-to-install swing, hours of play and adventure await your children!

2 - Build a hut

Are your children real little adventurers? Then it's time to build them a hut where all their stories can come to life. Custom-made or with recycled materials, the tree house or ground-level hut will become your children's favourite place. They can use this space to express their creativity and develop their imagination.

If the hut is perfectly waterproof, you can easily install suitable children's furniture. A bench, a desk and a chair or a small bookcase furnish their little house so they feel comfortable. The hut will then become a refuge where they can play, have fun or relax.

3 - Use vegetation

If you opt for installing a teepee or a plant-based hut, use the plants in your garden to give it a magical feel. Climbing plants like wisteria or clematis have dense foliage and grow quickly. For a plant-based hut, create a wooden structure for the plant to climb on. Don't forget to leave an opening large enough for your children to slip inside.

The plant teepee or vegetated shelter creates a unique place for your child while being a decorative element for your garden.

4 - Set up a sandbox

You don't have the opportunity to go to the beach every day? Set up a little beach in your garden, for your children's greatest delight. Define the space using fairly high wooden planks and fill with sand, and your sandbox is ready! Your children just need to let their creativity speak to imagine shapes and stories in their new sandbox!

5 - Set up an agility course

This fifth tip is mainly possible in large gardens. Indeed, to set up an interesting and diverse agility course, you need to plan for a large enough space. You can then alternate slides, beams, stepping stones, hoops and other ropes throughout the course.

The agility course is suitable for both younger and older children. The youngest will do it accompanied by their parents to learn how to move, while the older ones can invent contests or stories throughout the course.

6 - Create a children's vegetable garden

How about teaching your children how to cultivate the soil to grow fruits, vegetables or flowers! Following Montessori principles, set up small vegetable planters at your children's height so they can easily access them. Then choose all the varieties you want to grow and observe nature evolve each day.

7 - Discover the garden's inhabitants

As an extension of the previous tip, this one allows your children to discover the garden's inhabitants. In addition to being stylish decorative elements, shelters for small animals are also an excellent way to attract and discover biodiversity.

Thus, in your garden, you can easily install:

  • A birdhouse
  • An insect hotel
  • A beehive
  • A shelter for rodents
  • A chicken coop...

These decorative and useful elements will look great in your garden and help you introduce these small animals to your children.

8 - Provide a relaxation area

Just like parents, children also want to relax in the garden. To make the most of outdoor spaces, you can set up a relaxation corner just for them. A lounger, a coffee table, a wooden bench or a deck chair will make them want to sit down and enjoy the nice weather!

Older children and teenagers will probably appreciate a hammock or a hanging chair. Comfortably settled in the garden, they can read or rest while enjoying the outdoors.

9 - Set up a dining area

During your family meals or dinners with friends, offer your children and their young guests the chance to sit around a table at their height. No need to invest in garden furniture for children! Simply opt for a low table for the garden which is at the ideal height for children. Outside of mealtimes, the garden coffee table becomes the perfect place for all manual activities.
