When should you start preparing the baby's room?

Generally, it is recommended to start preparing the baby's room between the 5th and 7th month of pregnancy. If your baby arrives early, the room will already be ready to welcome them, no matter what. It's not particularly useful to set up your child's room too early. Your tastes and desires will evolve, and you might need to redo everything a few months later.

The benefit of starting to set up the baby's room a few months before delivery is primarily to take your time. Choosing furniture, paint, and decor are important and enjoyable moments. Take your time to enjoy and appreciate these preparations!

💡 Tip: remember to anticipate delivery times for eco-responsible furniture manufactured in Europe.

The other reason is also practical. If you choose furniture from large retail chains, it is strongly recommended to open the boxes and leave them in the open air for several days or even weeks. Indeed, the glue and other substances used in the manufacturing of furniture from large retail chains can be harmful to baby's respiratory system. That's why eco-friendly furniture is surely the best option. Eco-responsible wooden furniture is VOC-free (volatile organic compound), formaldehyde-free and contains no harmful substances.

Finally, if you're redecorating the baby's room with wallpaper (and therefore glue), paint, or if you're doing messy work, we recommend airing out the room daily, for at least 10 minutes.

When and how to prepare the baby's room for their arrival?

Every family and approach to motherhood is different. However, there is essential furniture that is necessary in all baby rooms. The needs are the same for all newborns: sleeping, feeding, awakening, learning, and discovering.

To facilitate your baby's setup in their future room, we recommend planning for:

  • A baby bed. Bassinet, crib, or convertible baby bed, choose the sleeping arrangement that best suits your needs and room layout.
  • A dresser to store consumables like diapers, swaddles, wipes...
  • A wardrobe for your baby's clothes and bedding.
  • A wardrobe for easy access to all their belongings.
  • A changing table. This can be installed in the baby's room or in the bathroom depending on your interior layout.
  • A toy chest for storage and room organization. Toys and games will find their place in a dedicated spot and the room will always be tidy!
  • An armchair for parents. The baby's room is also the parents' space! Plan for a comfortable armchair for breastfeeding or bottle-feeding your child.

💡 Tips: For successful organization of your child's room, the key word is: organization! All essential items must be within reach and easily accessible. Ideally, you should be able to grab them with one hand, especially when you'll have your baby in your arms.

Meeting your child's needs

The choice of room where you'll set up your child is crucial, as is its lighting. If you have the chance to choose where your child will spend most of their time during the first months, prioritize a quiet room close to the parental bedroom. This helps reassure both the child and the parents!

Lighting is also an important factor in choosing and arranging the room. Windows should be equipped with shutters to create a darker environment during sleep times. In addition to natural lighting, you can add a night light to reassure baby during their first nights in their room. Soft lighting is also less harsh when you need to feed your child in the middle of the night.

The little extras that make all the difference

While waiting for baby's arrival, you have time to think about every detail to create a comfortable and soothing room. Everything you can do before your child's birth will save you time once your little girl or boy is home!

To make your newborn's future room a true paradise, opt for:

A rug. To define a play area separate from the sleeping area, to reduce noise from a loud wooden floor, or simply to add warmth to a room with tile flooring, a rug is a real asset. When installing a rug, we recommend adding non-slip strips or double-sided tape to prevent fall risks and keep the rug in place.

Outlet covers. Even if baby isn't walking yet, it's important to plan everything to enjoy family moments with peace of mind. Installing outlet covers takes only a few minutes and protects baby. It also prevents forgetting to install them once baby starts crawling and walking.

Déco chambre de bébé

The decor. Have fun with amusing or trendy colors and patterns. For a cozy feel, add curtains, cushions, poufs... Hanging decorations spark baby's curiosity and allow you to decorate even the smallest rooms. Wooden mobiles or ceiling decorations are always appreciated by little ones.

Preparing baby's room: your most frequent questions

It is recommended to start setting up the baby's room between the 5th and 7th month of pregnancy. This allows time to choose the right furniture, manage potential delivery delays, and avoid any last-minute stress. And bonus: you can peacefully enjoy this period to create a soft and secure cocoon.

The essentials: a baby bed (ideally convertible), a dresser with changing table, a wardrobe or closet for clothes, and a comfortable armchair for cuddling moments. Add a soft rug, some storage solutions, and you're all set! Less but better is often the key.

A good convertible bed must be secure, certified, made with healthy materials, and accompany your child's growth until they're 6 years old. At Nateo Concept, we offer designer, sustainable models made in France, designed to combine aesthetics, practicality, and eco-responsibility.

Opt for convertible and multifunctional furniture: bed with built-in storage, compact dresser with changing table, wall shelves... Light colors, mirrors, and good organization also help visually enlarge the space. A well-thought-out small space makes a perfect cocoon for baby!
