5 tips for setting up two children in the same room
When the family grows, the question of room organisation can quickly become problematic. If the walls of your home are not expandable, you're left with only one solution: setting up two children in the same room! Depending on your interior configuration, the children's ages and the available space, numerous solutions exist. Discover our 5 tips for arranging a room for two children!
1 - Choosing the furniture
Before choosing the decoration, it's important to focus on selecting the furniture that will furnish the room of your two children. In small spaces, modular or 2-in-1 furniture are a real asset. What matters initially is the choice of the children's beds.
To have two children sleep in a single room, several solutions are available to you:
- The loft bed. This elevated bed allows you to use the free space under the bed frame to install a play area, a desk or simply a reading corner. If the room configuration allows, you can install two loft beds side by side. Your children will then both sleep at height. The children's loft bed is mainly suitable for children from 6 years old or those who are autonomous at bedtime.
- The bunk bed. This is the space-saving solution par excellence! The bunk bed allows two children to sleep in a single bed frame. On the floor, the bunk bed only takes up the space of a single bed. This double furniture is perfect for two children, two teenagers or even a child and a teenager.
- The trundle bed. Finally, the last practical solution to save space: the children's trundle bed. This is a single bed that contains a second bed with a bed base and mattress. You just need to open the trundle bed drawer to set up the second sleeping area!
2 - Each child's own space
For your two children to feel comfortable in the shared room space, we advise you to create a separate area for each of them. Start by choosing separate beds, so they can maintain their privacy at bedtime. Their sleeping area will then be arranged and decorated according to each child's tastes. You can differentiate the spaces by choosing specific bedding for each child, cushions or soft toys for the younger ones.
Beyond sleeping arrangements, your children should be able to engage in their different activities without disturbing each other. Two separate desks and defined spaces in the bedroom can help you organise the space for each child. To partition a child's room without cluttering the space, opt for storage furniture. They are both practical and aesthetic! A shelf accessible from both sides, a wardrobe or a bookcase can serve as a partition to define the spaces.
Finally, decoration plays an important role in partitioning spaces. If you don't have enough room in the shared bedroom to install furniture or desks, you can simply position a curtain! A light sheer curtain allows you to distinguish each child's space, or a folding screen is ideal for separating the environment as desired.
3 - A desk area for two children
As soon as your children start school, they will need a desk to study, do their homework or simply for their manual activities. If your children's room allows it, it's preferable to install two desks. You can then place them side by side, mirrored or on each side of the room. The children's desk can also serve as a partition in the room to define each child's personal space.
To personalise your children's or teenagers' desk area, let them choose the decoration according to their desires. Different desk accessories, a table lamp and mismatched desk chairs are an excellent way to distinguish the two spaces.
If your children are of different ages (a child and a teenager for example) or even if you have twins, we advise you to separate the spaces well. Sharing the same room is not always easy, they will be delighted to have a space of their own!
4 - Storage solutions for organisation
Two children in the same room inevitably means twice as many things to store! Between clothes, school supplies, books, toys and electronic devices, your children's room can quickly become very cluttered. To avoid disorder and leave them enough space to thrive, multiply storage options!
Depending on the available space in your teenagers' or children's room, you can opt for various options:
- The children's wardrobe. A must-have for storing your children's clothes and bedding! If possible, install a wardrobe for each child so they can store their belongings inside.
- The shelf or bookcase. As they grow, they will need space to organise work materials, books and their games. A shared bookcase or a shelf on each side of the room is ideal for decluttering the space.
- The chest of drawers. This small storage furniture easily fits into any room. With its wide drawers, it adapts to all your needs: bedding, linen, clothes, toys...
For small spaces and less spacious rooms, play with heights. Wall shelves, a headboard with storage or hanging baskets are very practical and functional in a small room!
5 - Harmonious decoration
The decoration of a room for two children is the most creative and fun part! Enjoy yourself and ask your children's opinion to choose decorative elements. By choosing pastel colours or neutral tones, you can easily create harmony while defining spaces.
For the walls and floor, opt for a light and neutral colour. You can then more freely add touches of bright colours, patterns and prints. To materialise the separation of spaces with decoration, use different colours on each side. If you want to dare a clear demarcation, a strip of paint in the centre of the room (from ceiling to floor) will create a very striking visual boundary.
With decoration, furniture or bedding, it's easy to create a comfortable and functional room for your two children. If you're investing in children's furniture, opt for wooden children's furniture, responsible and sustainable. Your children will then grow up in a healthy and ethical environment!
