Baby's Room: Tips for Welcoming Your Little One

Waiting for baby's arrival can be long for parents eager to meet their future child. Fortunately, there's plenty to keep you busy throughout pregnancy, particularly with preparing the baby's room. Indeed, this precious time you have before the arrival of a newborn can be used to prepare the ideal cosy nest.

When should you start preparing the baby's room?

Just like announcing the pregnancy, there's no real rule about timing. Each couple will do things as they feel is right. Generally, the most cautious wait until the second trimester before starting purchases to ensure that baby is doing well and the pregnancy will continue. But in reality, nothing prevents you from starting to buy things as soon as you discover the pregnancy.

Starting to arrange the room from 6 months of pregnancy is, in our opinion, a good time. This leaves you 3 months to perfect everything and take your time without stress. Moreover, the mother-to-be is still (generally) fit enough to go shopping.

What about the birth list?

To reduce expenses related to baby's arrival, you can create a birth list to send to your loved ones. They can then choose one or several items to gift you in preparation for baby's arrival. The birth list is a great way to receive items you truly need and like. To ensure you receive everything on time, you can send your birth list to your loved ones around 5 or 6 months of pregnancy.

What are the essentials in a baby's room?

To prepare the baby's room, there are several essential items to consider to be properly equipped.

Furniture

The first purchases often concern furniture. As this is the largest expense, starting with this purchase is often preferable to better control your budget. You can choose a complete wooden baby room to opt for a matching set of furniture. What we call a baby room usually includes:

  • A baby cot with bars (which can be convertible for longer use)
  • A baby chest of drawers (which can be equipped with a changing top to create a changing table with storage)
  • A baby wardrobe
  • A changing table

Depending on the chosen furniture, you can create the complete baby room that will meet your needs. To choose sustainable furniture, you can opt for an evolutive baby room in solid wood. This is notably the case with our white VOLT duo baby room. Preferably ensure you choose FSC or PEFC certified wood, and even, why not, a baby boy room or a baby girl room made in France.

Decoration

Once the furniture is installed, you can have fun with decoration. Several possibilities are available to you, such as using colourful paint or pretty wallpaper, adding frames, lamps, a nice armchair or any other decorative object that will personalise the room according to your wishes or a pre-defined theme for example.

Linen

Textiles will then complete the decoration with bedding (only a fitted sheet is needed to complement the sleeping bag during the first months), as well as curtains, cushions, rugs, etc. Preferably choose soft and natural materials to create a pleasant environment for your baby.

Developmental toys

At birth, your baby won't need toys and it's essentially your presence that will be necessary. But you'll see, they'll grow very quickly and will soon start to become aware. To stimulate their development, you can therefore start buying some developmental toys now. Choose items dedicated to early ages to ensure they are appropriate for your child's age. You can store these in a small basket or toy chest to be placed in the baby's room.

What other items do you need for baby's arrival?

Beyond items dedicated to the baby's room, there are many other things you'll need to choose to prepare for their arrival. You can easily find lists online that will help you see things more clearly.

Feeding

Whether you decide to opt for breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, you'll need some items to ensure your child's meals. Make sure to research well to anticipate your child's needs. Advice will also be provided after birth at the maternity ward.

Sleep

Finally, your baby won't sleep in their cot straight away. Consider choosing a cradle or a co-sleeping cot that will be placed in your room during your child's first 6 months. You can also opt for a Moses basket as a complement so that baby can take naps in the living room for example.

Transport

For returning from the maternity ward and daily travel, you'll need to equip yourself for transport. Stroller, car seat, baby carrier, solutions vary according to your preferences and lifestyle. Make sure to anticipate this, as you'll need it from day one.
